By Car
If you prefer to be mobile and not to depend on a car rented on the place, you should come to Croatia by your own car, which proved to be a cheaper option. The briefest way from Italy is via Trieste, continuing via Rijeka and Zadar.
Itinerary Trieste –Pese/Pesek (Slovenia) pass –Jelsane pass/ Rupa (Croatia) - Matulji - Rijeka (Ferry port). Car documents Valid driving license and car certificate are obligatory. The international green insurance card (with a casco insurance issued for your holiday period) is also highly recommended.
Toll roads Further highway parts are tolled: Zagreb - Karlovac Zagreb - Krapina Varazdin - Gorican Zagreb - Slavonski Brod Rijeka - Kupjak Tunnel Ucka Krk Bridge Toll amount depends on car type and size. Speed limits and maximum limit of Alcohol rate Croatia has different speed limits: 50 km/h in urban areas; 80 km/h out of urban areas (if otherwise not indicated);130 km/h on highways. Maximum limit of alcohol rate allowed in the blood: 0.0 per thousand.
Petrol stations The petrol stations are opened every day from 7 a.m. until 8. p.m. and until 10 p.m. during the tourist season. In the major cities and along the roads out of the urban areas, there are no-stop working petrol stations.
Arriving by plane Airplanes, comfortably and quickly, carry you to your destination. 16 international airlines are connecting Croatia to the rest of the world.
International airlines operating in Croatia:
There are 9 international airports in Croatia (Zagreb, Split, Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Pula, Brac, Osijek, Zadar, Losinj), some of them operating during the tourist season only. Zagreb city is connected by direct flights, but to reach other destinations an intermediate landing must be considered. There are also several sport airports. Arriving by boat Ferry connections between Croatian coast and Ancona are well known. Prices are rather convenient. You can reach Hvar by ferry from Split or Drvenik. The journey from Starigrad takes about two hours and costs 21.40 kn per person. For a car transportation 141 kn must be added. The trip from Drvenik to Sucuraj takes about 15 minutes. Hydroplane transportation is also available towards Hvar or Jelsa. You can continue toward Igoumenitsa in Greece, but we want to spend our holiday in Croatia! Jadrolinija is the main coastal navigation company in Croatia. The ferry traffic along the Adriatic Coast is also well organized. A ferry line along the whole coast exists, and also single lines in five districts that connect Rijeka; Zadar; Sibenik; Split and Dubrovnik. A trip along this coast is really fantastic!!
You can comfortably reach Hvar from Split or Drvenik by ferry, or by ferry or hydroplane you can go directly to Hvar-City, docking in front of Carpe Diem. From Split to Starigrad, the journey takes about 2 hours and costs 21,40 kn a person. From Split to Hvar-City, it takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes for the same price: 21,40 kn. The price for the car transportation is 141 kn. The trip from Drvenik to Sucuraj lasts 15 minutes.
