The Theatre of Hvar
The ancient theatre was built in 1612. At that time it was the only theatre in Europe which opened its doors to all classes of society. The theatre has a 19th century interior with miniature boxes, a gorgeous stage, a fresco on the ceiling and two frescoes on the stage walls. This fact makes going to the theatre such a romantic adventure. The theatre was restored a couple of times; two rows of the lodges are from 1800. Hvar’s inhabitants always enjoyed the theatre lifeeven before the theatre was built. The performances took place in front of the cathedral.
